Midlothian has been the backdrop for more famous film and TV sets than you may imagine, including the celebrated Outlander series. Enjoy time in Midlothian to follow in their stead on this " set jetting" itinerary.
THE DA VINCI CODE
Begin with the star that is Rosslyn Chapel, magnificent and mysterious, and a main feature of Dan Brown’s 2003 Da Vinci Code novel and subsequent blockbuster film.
In 2021, the National Mining Museum Scotland was a major filming location for The Lost King starring Sally Hawkins, Steve Coogan and Harry Lloyd. The museum is fascinating to visit. It tells the story of coal and the life of the miners through the ages. It is also a 5-star visitor attraction and and insight into a fascinating time in Scotland's social history.
PRINCESS SWITCH 3
The Princess Switch 3 was filmed at Newbattle Abbey College near Dalkeith. The college was transformed into a winter wonderland for the third film which stars Holyrood actress Vanessa Hudgens. Take a wander around their gardens or enjoy a walk in Lord Ancrum’s Woods, which are lovely at any time of year.

OUTLANDER CONNECTIONS
Fans of Outlander touring the neighbourhood area of East Lothian can easily detour via Midlothian and stop by Glencorse Old Kirk. It is nestled in the beautiful grounds of Glencorse House in the foothills of the Pentlands. This is where Claire and Jamie tied the knot in season one. It’s a wonderfully atmospheric and most romantic setting. Visits to Glencorse are by appointment only.
Another Outlander filming location is Arniston House, which featured in season four. This historic landmark is a spectacular William Adam mansion with over 450 years of rich history and drama, including links with the Knights Templar. Tours are available at certain times of year.
