What’s On at Newbattle Abbey College
Newbattle Abbey College is a 900 year old former monastery founded by King David I and built by Cistercian monks, set within 125 acres of woodland and parkland.
Steeped in history, it is believed that the Declaration of Arbroath was drafted here, and the baptismal font believed to be that of Mary Queen of Scots is preserved in the Chapel. The estate became the Kerr family home from the 16th to the 20th century before being gifted to the people of Scotland in 1937 by Philip Kerr, the 11th Marquess of Lothian
Today, Newbattle offers Social Science and Rural Skills Pathway courses and serves as an events venue for meetings, conferences, celebrations and weddings.
Visitors can enjoy guided tours on the last Friday of each month, led by an expert guide, and the college is introducing afternoon teas served in the breathtaking Drawing Room (check the website for dates and booking).
